BUILDING YOUR SPACE IN THE METAVERSE

Developing on Decentraland

One of the key opportunities for businesses looking to create a presence in the Metaverse is the purchasing of land and developing on this within platforms such as Decentraland.  Purchasing land on Decentraland isn’t a difficult process, but it’s important that you then hold this asset in a secure wallet for protection.  Once purchased, there are 2 main development options that exist, and we’ll discuss these in more detail below.

Canadeem is helping multiple brands bring their virtual visions to life by purchasing land and developing on these in public metaverses such as The Sandbox and Decentraland.  We also help to secure these purchases using hardware technology that drastically limits the risk of being hacked.

Land Development on the Decentraland Metaverse

There are 2 main options for businesses looking to develop on the Decentraland Metaverse.  The first is to use the native development kit, which is ideal for beginners and non-coders, however, most businesses should opt for a more customised, brand-focused build using Decentraland’s Software Developer Kit (SDK), which as the name suggests requires knowledge and ability in coding and software development.  As a business that helps support brands, we’ll obviously focus on the SDK methodology on this web page.

When developing on Decentraland, it’s important to understand more about your land.  First and foremost, the size of your land will determine what you can build.  After all, the scale of the land should mirror real life.  Here are the main land options available to you:

Decentraland is made up of parcels of LAND.  The smallest LAND size is 1×1, which equates to 16mx16m in real-life scale.  Therefore, if you’re looking to develop a stadium or hotel, it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to use 1×1 LAND for this purpose.  Within each LAND, ‘Scenes’ can be built on one or multiple parcels of land.  Therefore, when developing on your Decentraland LAND, you’ll ultimately be creating Scenes that you can either use for yourself or make available for other landowners to also deploy.

While it’s possible to recreate many types of buildings with a scene, there are a number of limitations that you should be aware of before engaging in a Decentraland development project:

  • Height limitations of 20m
Irrespective of how much LAND you own, there is a height limitation of 20m for each development.  If you’re therefore, looking to recreate the Burj Khalifa on Decentraland, you’d be out of luck on this platform!
  • No underground development
You can only build on top of land in Decentraland, meaning that development underground is not possible.
  • Scene Limitations
Performance in Decentraland is key and will be important as the platform becomes more and more popular.  Therefore, the developers of Decentraland have created scene limitations.  An obvious scene limitation is only being able to develop on LAND that exists within the boundaries of Decentraland.  Another is the number of elements allowed in a scene.  As technology evolves, it’s likely that some of these limitations will be relaxed, but for now, it’s important to work and plan within these restrictions.
